Uganda's Internet Shutdown: Impact on Elections and Democracy (2026)

Uganda is once again facing an internet shutdown as it gears up for its general elections, raising serious concerns about transparency and the potential for election fraud. This is according to reports from BBC Verify, with senior journalist Peter Mwai reporting from Nairobi, Kenya.

Internet monitoring organization Netblocks has confirmed a significant disruption to internet connectivity in Uganda, with the drop-off starting Tuesday evening. They recorded a dramatic decrease, with connectivity plummeting to approximately 20%.

This drastic reduction aligns with a directive from Uganda's communications commission, ordering internet service providers to halt public access to the internet. The commission claims this measure is necessary to combat the spread of online misinformation, disinformation, electoral fraud, and to prevent incitement of violence.

But here's where it gets controversial... Netblocks has issued a stark warning: rather than curbing misinformation, this action is likely to hinder transparency and increase the risk of vote fraud.

The restriction of internet access poses a significant challenge. It makes it difficult for citizens to share information, videos, and images about events online. This, in turn, hampers the ability of journalists and election monitors to verify information and report accurately.

This isn't the first time Uganda has resorted to this measure. During the 2021 elections, which were marred by widespread protests and dozens of fatalities, the internet was shut down for at least a week.

Thursday's presidential election is a rematch of the 2021 contest. President Yoweri Museveni is seeking his seventh term in office, facing off against former pop star Bobi Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi.

What do you think? Does restricting internet access truly protect against misinformation, or does it open the door to other problems? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
