"They wanted me back, and that's all that matters. It's a game I love, and I thought I was done with it. But something about this excites me. It's like a door opened, and I have to walk through it to find out if I still got it."
When asked about his family's reaction, Rivers shared, "I think we all feel a mix of emotions - scared, nervous, excited. My wife has been my biggest fan, and she's concerned about the physical aspect, which is understandable."
Rivers continued, "For 250 games, I took that risk every week, whether I was 24 or 44. Anything can happen, and that's always been a part of the game. But I'm ready to give it a shot and see what happens."
His children, too, are supportive. His younger ones are excited because they don't remember Dad playing, while his older girls are confused yet thrilled, as they remember their dad as a 16-year-old ballgame enthusiast.
Steichen called Rivers' signing a "full-circle moment," praising his intelligence and game vision. "For him to want to do this at 44 is incredible, and I know he'll give his all to the organization."
Rivers' return also has an impact on his Hall of Fame eligibility. In his first year of eligibility, he was named a semifinalist, but if he joins the Colts' active roster, his eligibility will be pushed back by five years.
"Missing the Hall of Fame is an honor, but I wasn't counting down the years. If it happens one day, it will be special, but that wasn't my motivation."
