Currently, the Laces are dominating the standings with an impressive 5-1 record, having only stumbled against the Mist while triumphing over both of last season's finalists. This success isn't a stroke of luck; it's a testament to their strategic brilliance.
At the heart of their formidable starting lineup are Brittney Sykes, Jackie Young, and Alyssa Thomas. This trio is a true two-way force, capable of scoring in myriad ways, creating opportunities for their teammates, and effectively defending multiple positions. They are the engine that drives the Laces forward.
But here's where it gets truly game-changing: the Laces' depth is emerging as the ultimate key to their championship aspirations. They boast one of the most productive benches in Unrivaled, a luxury that allows Head Coach Andrew Wade to strategically rest his starters without a significant dip in on-court performance. This deep reserve not only preserves energy but also provides a crucial safety net against the inevitable challenges of injuries and foul trouble that can plague even the most dominant teams. This depth was evident even before the season kicked off, and through the first six games, it's proving to be every bit as potent as anticipated.
And this is the part most people miss: the bench unit is outperforming expectations. The Laces' second unit, featuring Jordin Canada, Naz Hillmon, and Maddy Siegrist, offers a compelling blend of seasoned experience, youthful energy, raw athleticism, and versatile two-way play.
Jordin Canada brings a championship pedigree, being a two-time WNBA champion and a two-time First Team All-Defensive selection. Her prowess is underscored by leading the WNBA in steals in both 2019 and 2023. She's a calm and seasoned point guard who excels on both ends of the court. Naz Hillmon, last season's Sixth Player of the Year, has significantly expanded her game by adding a reliable 3-point shot. She also contributed to a gold medal victory at the 3x3 AmeriCup this past summer. Maddy Siegrist, the youngest on the Laces, complements the group with her size, efficient interior scoring, and ability to stretch the floor.
