A shocking incident unfolded in Saskatoon, leaving a major roadway in the city's north end temporarily shut down. The cause? A medical emergency that sparked a fiery crash involving a semi-truck. But here's where it gets controversial...
Saskatoon police revealed that a medical event was the primary reason for this chaotic scene. At 7:31 a.m., an advisory was issued, warning of the collision at Circle Drive and Millar Avenue. The crash blocked both east and westbound lanes on Circle Drive, with images showing the semi-truck engulfed in flames.
"Motorists were advised to take alternate routes until the area could be safely cleared," the police statement read.
The City of Saskatoon's fire department responded swiftly, extinguishing the flames by 8:03 a.m. after receiving a call at 7:04 a.m. about the burning semi-truck. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the truck's occupant managed to exit safely.
Traffic was rerouted via Venture Crescent to bypass the incident, and by 3 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon, the eastbound lanes of Circle Drive were reopened.
Crews worked diligently throughout the morning and early afternoon to remove overhead signage and street light structures that were damaged in the collision. The city emphasized that it is their responsibility to fix the downed signage, as it falls within their jurisdiction.
Sanding trucks were dispatched to the location, and drivers were advised to exercise caution due to potential icy conditions on the roadway.
Clair Andreas, who works at a gym across the street from the crash site, described the incident as "very loud" with no initial signs of smoke. "It was a lot of sirens, lights, and noise," she recalled.
Zach Robertson, a co-worker of Andreas, witnessed the aftermath of the crash as he arrived for work. Initially, he thought the situation was under control due to the presence of emergency services. However, within minutes, the flames intensified, reaching heights of almost 10 feet.
"It smelled like burning plastic," Robertson said, expressing his hope that the driver was unharmed.
And this is the part most people miss... While the cause of the medical event remains unknown, the impact of such incidents on our roads and communities is undeniable. It serves as a reminder of the importance of road safety and the quick response of emergency services.
