Meanwhile, the BMA has been vocal in criticizing the government's pay offer to doctors. This has led to accusations of hypocrisy, with the GMB union, representing a majority of BMA's internal staff, calling out the association's actions.
And this is the part most people miss: the BMA's pay offer to its staff is said to range from 3.2% to 16.31%, but the GMB disputes these figures, arguing that the real terms pay increase is much lower. They claim that BMA staff have endured nearly 17% pay erosion since 2012 due to below-inflation awards.
A survey among GMB members at the BMA revealed a strong support for industrial action, with over 91% in favor. The BMA's offer, which included a slight increase in non-consolidated payment and an extra day's leave at Christmas, was seen as inadequate by the GMB.
The BMA's CEO, Rachel Podolak, defended the association's position, stating they offer above-market rates and face budget pressures. She emphasized the importance of the enhanced package, which includes benefits beyond salary, for the work-life balance and well-being of their staff.
